A Day in the Life of Dave Melin

The second part in our series of ‘Day in the Life’ series, we find out what our Managing Director, Dave, gets up to on a typical day.

Time with the company: Since the beginning

 

What’s typically the first task of the day?

The first task of the day at home is to sort out my daughter’s amazingly wild hair, get her dressed and into nursery.

My first task of the day at work is to stick the kettle on. I just can’t start a day without a nice cup of tea. Then I’m writing a list of tasks to get completed and people to phone that day before checking the diary to see when the inevitable first conference call of the day will start.

 

How would you describe your role within the Amtech team?

I think it would be more interesting to see what the rest of the team believe my role is within the company! I guess my main role is to work with the different teams to ensure they have everything they need to do their job and provide a good and responsive service to our customers. I’m also tasked with looking at the strategy for moving the business forward and providing new and improved services working with each department lead.

 

What is your main priority on a typical day?

Customer service. Whether it is ensuring that we respond to requests for pre and post sales in a professional and timely manner through to taking escalations from our 24×7 ServiceDesk team.

 

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of the job is working with the team. We have an excellent team of employees who are all working towards the same cause which is to grow the business, learn as much as we can and have some fun along the way. I’d like to think that everyone understands what we are trying to do and why.

 

Have you had much experience in this industry before, if so, what?

I’ve been working in the industry since leaving university (far too many moons ago than I care to recall). I was very fortunate that my first job was as part of the team that set-up Virgin Mobile in the UK. That provided a very steep learning curve but was an amazing place to work and a great experience. I hope I’ve taken most of the good things about that job into all the other roles I have worked in which has culminated in the setup of Amtech. I’ve also worked in other large service providers as well as smaller niche systems integrators so I’ve have seen things from multiple angles and perspectives.

 

What does a typical day look like for you?

After the nursery run, I’m normally in the office early and spend the first few hours getting as much admin completed before it gets busy. I’m then either working with our business development team to look at new prospects and joining conference calls to try and secure new business or working with the technical teams to look at new and existing products and services we have in our portfolio and how we can expand and improve on them.

After lunch, time permitting, I’m normally working on proposals or reading up on new products and services we could be offering and liaising with our marketing team to get things out in the public domain.

Never a dull day!
