This week we learn more about Emma Bees who is one of our regular writers on the blog. Emma is part of the marketing team at Amtech and she is also the go to Sales and Business Administrator. Originally, Emma was the manager of one the biggest stores on the high street, and has only just recently made the leap to the channel industry. She’s been making real strides since then and her experience from Retail has brought a refreshing approach to her work at Amtech. Read on to find out more about Emma’s favourite pastimes, and to relive some of her experiences over the past few months of adjusting to the fast moving world of the technology industry.
What’s your favourite flavour of ice-cream?
I do love a good mint choc chip but my most favourite way of eating ice cream is to mix it up as much as I can so it goes all gooey and then pour on a load of that hardening chocolate sauce – amazing! It’s the inner child in me, my daughter eats it like that too!
If you could be an animal, then what animal would you be?
Ever since I was little I’ve had some sort of fascination with wild cats and I’m amazed at leopards and lions but most of all the cheetahs. To be able to run at those speeds would be very cool.
What’s the one thing you enjoy the most?
There’s lots of things I love, like staying in bed a little bit longer at the weekends, having crazy fun nights out with friends but the most enjoyable part of life is spending it with my two children and husband. Time with them I cherish. Getting my daughter to help me plant seeds in the green house and helping her with her creative mind, to helping my son count and play trains with him. Being a mum to these two poppets is the best!!!
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
Well I’m not fussy really, I’ve been to some really cool places recently, Essaouria Morocco, New York, Croatia and my favourite place was probably Lena, two hours north of Oslo in January. The snow was amazing and the kids loved it. But I’d happily just choose a nice remote Villa near a beach with my family. Sun, sand and sea. Done.
What’s the nerdiest thing that you like to do in your spare time?
This is a tricky one. I’m not actually sure if I do anything nerdy at all really. Although I must confess that I do love a good Si-fi film. Some of my favourites are of course the Matrix, I think I’ve watched it almost a million times! Another great one is Children of Men, I love the concept of this film. I cry every time at that one particular scene towards the end of the film (but I won’t say which bit as it’s a spoiler). I think this love for Sci-Fi films stems from my child hood, as my Dad is a massive film buff and I would often watch Robo Cop and Judge Dredd along with many others. So yeah maybe I’m a film nerd?
What do you like about working at Amtech?
So far I can honestly say everything – coming from retail Amtech is a breath of fresh air and I’m so glad to be here. It’s not just the fact I can work from home once a week to help with child care but also working in a small team that feels so big. Amtech has a big future and to be part of it feels great. They listen to you and your goals and want you and the company to succeed. But I suppose as with any job it’s not what you do but who you work with and this Amtech bunch is great!
What’s been your biggest challenge whilst working on Amtech?
My biggest challenge so far is coming from retail and embracing a completely new role and career. I suppose my biggest challenge is re-kindling my love for writing and technology generally. Before in retail I had a love hate relationship with computers and printers, so working with laptops, screens and having a wireless keyboard was all new for me! So getting the tech out the way I’ve had to start writing blogs and writing case studies, which I’m a bit rusty on to say the least but lucky for me my partner in crime, who also started on the same day as me is George and he’s a literature master. But putting that aside I have really enjoyed doing things outside my comfort zone and had a great response to my two blog posts so far. If you’d like to read them check them out, The only Girl in the Office and It’s Do or Die for retail.
What are you looking forward to in the future with Amtech?
Being able to develop myself and to be part of a company that will grow and grow. The future is very bright with Amtech and I feel lucky to be part of it and that’s down to its values as a company set out by Dave Melin and Dan Antonowicz. What great guys!
