Getting to know the team – James Farmer (Senior UC Consultant)

James Farmer is one of our senior engineers and a true specialist in unified communications. Since a young age, James has always had an inquisitive nature, especially when it comes to computers and electronics. He often tells us of the daring experiments he used to carry out around the home when he was growing up, like the time when he opened up the VCR just to see what was inside and how it worked.

Coming straight out of college, James landed a position at a prestigious building society and training course in the communications department, and from there his knowledge and career progressed rapidly as he grew to love the complexities behind phone systems. James takes a hands on approach to his learning, development and designs as an engineer, and he has gained comprehensive knowledge of the solutions offered by major channel vendors, such as Cisco, Microsoft and VMware, particularly when it comes to unified communications.

Without further ado, we bring to you, James Farmer.

What’s your favourite flavour of ice-cream?

Choc Chip or strawberry. One extreme to the other.

If you could be an animal then what animal would you be?

I would either be a lion or a dog. I’d like to be a lion for living in the wild, eating red meat and being the king of the jungle. The dog because, who doesn’t wish they could sleep all day and have humans running after them, feeding them and cleaning up after them? Dogs have a pretty chilled life.

What’s the one thing you enjoy the most?

One thing I enjoy the most has to be gaming. I grew up around it and the first game I remember playing was when I was 5 years old and typing DOOM2 via DOS and hitting run to play DOOM 2 every morning. I also played around with cheat codes. I still remember them actually, like ‘iddqd’ for god mode and ‘idkfa’ for unlimited weapons.

If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?

Somewhere in America. Either South America or back in Florida (somewhere I visited recently and loved) especially now it’s so cold in the UK.

What’s the nerdiest thing that you like to do in your spare time?

Nerdiest thing… now that’s a question. I think everything I do is quite Nerdy. I like to play computer games, I’m an Admin of a gaming clan, I build technical systems at home to work out how they work, and I get really excited when I have finished putting a complex call centre together and it starts working. I guess you could say there is a mini dance at the end (when no one is looking).

What do you like about working at Amtech?

Working at Amtech has been a great part of my career. Out of all the companies I have worked for in the past, this one has made me truly recognise my skills in the industry and has helped to both push and advance me as an engineer. Plus, it’s great fun having a laugh in the office. My colleagues are good people.

What’s been your biggest challenge whilst working on Amtech?

Hmm, my biggest challenge… I think, really, it has been looking at the business from less of a technical side and trying to understand all the commercials and politics. Got to love politics.

What are you looking forward to in the future with Amtech?

I’m looking forward to seeing the company grow and being a part of that in the future… I’d like to advance myself and play a key part in helping the company grow.

Closing Words

That brings our interview to a close and actually marks the last of our ‘Getting to know the team’ series for the time being, as things slowly start getting busier towards the end of the year. We’ve really enjoyed interviewing various members of the team over the past few months and I’m sure we’ll be doing some more in the future – whenever we can! Never fear, we’ll still be posting regularly to the blog with lots of other new and interesting content.

We’d also like to stress that we’re open to suggestions and recommendations if there’s any content that you’d particularly like to see. Just let us know in the comments below.

Big thanks to James for volunteering some of his time to be with us here on the blog. As always, if you have any other questions for James then I’m sure he’d be more than happy to answer them in the comments.
